Our Story

Zoar Church has been a place of faith, community, and hope since 1844, when German immigrants settled in New Hanover, Illinois and founded a congregation they named Zoar — meaning “a small, safe place” from Genesis 19:19–22. That promise of refuge and belonging still defines who we are today. Our historic 1862 stone church, nestled in a peaceful country setting alongside our cemetery, stands as a reminder of our rich heritage and God’s enduring presence.

For generations, Zoar has been a vibrant and growing congregation, committed to reflecting Christ’s love through worship, fellowship, and service. We are a church family that values tradition while eagerly embracing the future, trusting that God continues to lead us into new opportunities for ministry.

At Zoar, faith is lived out in meaningful ways — through inspiring worship, Christian education for all ages, mission outreach that supports both local and global needs, and fellowship that brings people together in joyful community. From Sunday services and Bible studies to youth activities, church camp, and beloved annual events, there is a place for everyone to grow, serve, and belong.

Zoar Church remains true to its founding spirit: a small, safe place where God’s love is experienced and shared. We invite you to come and see what faith feels like at Zoar UCC.

Genesis 19:19-22 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

19 your servant has found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake me and I die.  20 Look, that city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one.  Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!”  21 He said to him, “Very well, I grant you this favor too, and will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.  22 Hurry, escape there, for I can do nothing until you arrive there.” Therefore, the city was called Zoar.[

Our History

From modest beginnings, we've grown through unwavering dedication and a commitment to continuous improvement. Each step has reinforced our core belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of integrity. We're passionate about what we do, and we're excited to share our story with you.

The date of the organization of Zoar Church is officially noted as Feb. 28, 1844, at which time the first statues or constitution took effect. The original or first church was a Log Church, approximately 20 feet by 30 feet.  It had a dirt floor and seats consisting of sawed-off blocks upon which split rails were set.  The congregation approved the building of a sandstone church in 1862. On Feb. 1, 1863, the new church was dedicated. (46 feet long, 33 feet wide and inside 22 feet high, of broken fine stones, with Corinthian arched windows, marbleized altar and pulpit pillars, pretty chairs, round door arch.  Over time, the interior of the church has been updated to what is seen today.  The three color stone exterior is a memorable and beautiful feature of our church.
